Hostel pod Voglom and Bohinj during winter

Bohinj winter conjures up a real winter wonderland. Its main jewel in the winter season is Vogel Ski center, offering impressing views of the snowy peaks. The ski slopes are already covered with enough snow that this year's Vogel Ski center’s ski opening happened already on November 22nd.  Hostel pod Voglom is located right by the lake just 3 km from the gondola platform that provides access to Vogel. In December and January Hostel pod Voglom changes to more peaceful and quiet surrounding. Boats, canoes, bicycles, helmets and ropes ... all go to sleep and we bring out snowshoes, snow rafts and sleds. There is also time for peaceful and quiet walks in the forests, where the surrounding’s white color and stillness is imprinted in our body.

We are pleased to announce again that Hostel pod Voglom won the first prize again this year in the category of youth hostels in the project My country - beautiful and hospitable. We are very proud of it as it nods to our efforts. We aspire to give our guests satisfaction and we try to hear their wishes, so together we can write a success story.

Cold winter days make the hostel a cozy shelter; the wood burning stove conjures a warm and homely atmosphere to our guests at breakfast. Larger groups can enjoy a large fireplace in the dining room, where there are many opportunities for socializing with different games and books that are available in the hostel. As part of our offer there is also Hostel Cottage Suha, which is primarily suited for groups who want to rent the whole house.

We have prepared special packages that include ski passes to the nearby ski slopes. Details and prices are available on our website: PAC Sports and Hostel pod Voglom. In addition to the ski tickets, offers also include breakfast and snowshoe rent. For fun loving groups and individuals there is snow rafting, which is organized in the valley in Bohinj Bistrica or at Vogel Ski center. When there is enough snow in Vogar, we also organize very popular night sledding. Besides all of the above you can rent snowshoes and discover the winter wonderland on your own.

New Year's that magical time when you set new goals for the coming year. We wish that year 2015 will be a big success for you!

If you are in Bohinj around New Year’s time, there is a bountiful program for sports and fun. Every Saturday you can buy local delicacies at a farmers’ market in Bohinjska Bistrica. Every year Bohinj municipality organizes festivities in December. There is free shuttle to the New Year’s venues.

Hostel pod Voglom organizes a traditional celebration of New Year. In our New Year's Eve package we offer a New Year's snack, champagne, party with a DJ to the late morning of the first day of the new year. New Year's Eve package also includes a discount on ski passes at Vogel Ski center and at nearby ski slopes, free shuttle to Vogel Ski center and snowshoes rent. After we have happily entered another year, there are Ski packages where you can enjoy the best of what Bohinj and Hostel pod Voglom have to offer in winter season.

Welcome to Bohinj and Hostel pod Voglom!

Nativity scene in the Postojna cave

Nativity scene in the Postojna cave, the biggest live nativity scene set in an underground cave in the world – this year they are celebrating 25 years!

Foto: Valter Leban; www.postojnska-jama.eu
The live nativity scene is the biggest such event taking place anywhere in the world, and this year it's the 25th annual nativity scene! It is an event that can hardly get paralleled. During winter holidays the largest tourist cave of Europe becomes a unique set for the biblical scenes of the birth of Christ. The scenes are set along the few kilometres of the most beautiful underground cave structures. Despite their 25 year long tradition the event still represents an organizational and logistical challenge. This year’s event will be marked with new additions to the scenes and the story. There will be a new “prologue” set up, announcing the gospel story about the birth and will be set up in the Dance hall of the cave. The dance hall features special lighting made or murrain glass and the visitors come to it by the electrical train. The scene, where Virgin Mary receives the word about the birth will be set at the top of the high mount (the highest point within the cave). From there the visitors will continue through a part of the cave they do not see during a regular visit. The scene will be especially rich with visual and sound effects. Another novelty, this year, will be the different set-up of the main scene, which will include a theatrical production of shadows. The event concludes in the Concert hall, where the decorated evergreen tree will greet the visitors, while they enjoy the live music performance and the acrobatic number, high under the ceiling of the largest underground cavern. The act is prepared by the artisans of the Italian dancing theatre Sinakt – Circo Teatro Danza. To contribute to the festive spirit, there will be excellent young singers there, from Alenka Gotar, who trained her voice at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Julija Kramar, the winner of the Slovenia got talent and the local singer Jure Počkaj, who will return to his home town to perform at the event, while taking a break from the masters study of solo singing at the UCLA university in LA. Additionally, there will be children choirs that will also contribute to the festive spirit, and the nativity scenes will also be accompanied by the Christmas fair and celebrations at the entrance of the cave.

A nativity scene at the castle Predjamski grad – a Guinness record holder
Just 9 kilometres further is the Predjamski grad castle, which is one of the most astounding medieval fortifications. The castle has been guarding the entrance to a 123m high bedrock at the entrance of the cave system, for over 800 years. It was just this year that the castle was entered into the Guinness book of records as the largest cave castle in the world. As each year the castle will host the grand Slovenian nativity scene, which includes the elements of local life and the visitors can warm up by the fire and warm drinks.

The nativity scenes in Postojna cave can be visited on:
December 20., 21., 25., 26., 27. 28. and 29.

Winter time in Kranjska Gora

When the Upper Sava Valley is covered with ice and snow, the winter fun can begin. Night slalom skiing awaits you under the spotlights, and the winter sun accompanies you during unforgettable mountain ascents...

You can choose between 18 ski slopes of different technical difficulty. Ski lifts and ski runs stretch over the slopes of Vitranc from Kranjska Gora to Planica at altitudes from 800m to 1,215m. The system of 5 chairlifts and 13 drag lifts takes you to your dream trail. If you want to do something else, look at the map of ski runs and discover the splendid terrains also in Gozd Martuljek, Mojstrana and Rateče.

foto Ales Fevzer; www.kranjska-gora.si
One of the biggest advantages of ski slopes in Kranjska Gora is that there is only a snow covered beach separating you from your accommodation and the ski slopes. And of course, that a complete beginner can step onto the snow with the help of the excellent ski schools and instructors available.

If you like cross-country skiing for long periods of time, then set on a 40-kilometre-long carefully maintained trail from the centre of Kranjska Gora past the Spring of the Sava Dolinka River and Planica ski jumps into the Tamar Valley and from Kranjska Gora back towards Gozd Martuljek. Cross-country skiing trails are well maintained in Mojstrana as well. Cross-country skiing to the Krma Valley is fantastic.  The cross-country skiing from Rateče to Tamar with an altitude difference of 260m is physically demanding. Those with too much energy can join the night cross-country skiing event along a flood lit meadow between the centre of Kranjska Gora and the main road towards Rateče.

Set your own trail for cross-country skiing!

Winter has always been the time when farmers took a break from the daily work and started preparing themselves for the holidays. Although now ski events are the most-visited, crowded and fun events, the tradition of old village events, when myths and tales revive, is still alive...

Have you ever seen a live Christmas nativity scene where the actors wear crampons? And where instead of a barn, the Holy Child is surrounded by frozen waterfalls? In the Mlačca Gorge in Mojstrana, you will witness a unique half hour show “Live Christmas Nativity Scene in the Ice Kingdom", where women with children and baby carriers are looked after, as well as the disabled and the elderly, who can sit on available chairs...  After the show, you can take a walk through the Ice Kingdom of the Snow Queen, the large crystal hall with frozen waterfalls and jets of water, and see another nativity scene, this time “inanimate”, on your way to the parking lot. When: 25. - 28.12.2014 and 01. -  04.01.2015  16.00, 17.00 and 18.00.

The evergreen Karst

Green karst is one of those regions, where it might seem that it has nothing to offer to the tourists in the wintertime. As always, this is far away from the truth.  The life slows down during winter and runs in different rhythm. Perfect for everybody who enjoys  intimate moments, far away from the fast moving world.

Foto: www.zelenikras.si
Take your time and taste the local cuisine. In December, many farms prepare their meat for the winter in an event known as “koline”. During this time, you can enjoy in excellent home cooked food and taste delights such as blood sausages, cracknels, potatoes with sauerkraut, jota, koleraba and many more.

Foto: www.zelenikras.si
Despite cold mornings and long nights, Green karst offers many different activities. Adventure seekers will have an opportunity to explore the mysterious karst underground and discover new halls in Postojna cave, Planinska cave and Križna cave. Do not forget to bring your camera. The nature offers countless motives and details for astonishing photos that will serve as a vivid memory of your holiday in the heart of the Green karst.

Foto: www.zelenikras.si
In December and January, you can take part in one of numerous winter hikes on the hills and mountains of the Green karst. Visit Snežnik, the highest non-alpine mountain in Slovenia, take a hike with torches to the Sv. Trojica hill or visit mountain hut on the Nanos.

Those who enjoy in tradition and culture will be certainly impressed by the live nativity scene that takes place each year in the Postojna cave, and many Christmas and New Year concerts.

Plan your visit and take a rest in the Youth Hostel Proteus in Postojna. Why? Because it received a prestigious award for its interior design. Because its rooms have locally produced unique furniture. In addition, simply because you will feel at home.

Jezersko, where nature is at its best

All travelers who are staying in Hostel Pod Skalo in Kamnik town or Hostel Kranj in Kranj town, are kindly invited to visit the small mountain paradise, about 45 minutes by car from both hostels.

“Far away on the north of Ljubljana Basin, where the peaks of the Kamnik Alps touch the sky and separate the sunny Carniola from Carinthia, lies a small land, entirely independent and surrounded by high mountains – Jezersko.” This was written a hundred years ago in the first paragraph of a short publication about Jezersko by Igor Muri and Rudolf Andrejka.

History beat
The place (Jezersko – lake region) got its name after a huge glacial lake, that covered two valleys: the Ravenska Valley and the Makekova Valley. After a violent 40-day-long earthquake in 1348, the lake slowly  drained from the valleys. Jezersko was part of an important transport route. According to the Jezersko Chronicle, ‘the route past St. Ožbolt at Jezero was known and important to the merchants from Central Europe and the secular authorities, from its establishment up to the 16th century. The new road was of the same importance in the 20th century.' An eye hospital, set up in the 60s due to the favorable climate for curing eye tuberculosis and operating was of a great importance for Jezersko, for almost 20 years. Intact nature has been attracting travelers, adventurers, explorers, climbers, mountaineers … It should  stay so …

Winter fairytale
When experiencing a winter idyll in Jezersko, you definitely cannot stay indifferent. You can relax with a walk along the valley, ice skating on the frozen Planšarsko Lake or on the artificial ice ring by the lake, cross-country skiing or tobogganing on one of the most popular tracks in Slovenia. Freeride skiing enthusiasts can experience unforgettable adventures in the snow-clad mountain world of Jezersko. The most courageous and skilled climbers can enjoy climbing in the walls of the Kamnik Savinja Alps or on frozen waterfalls. You are welcome to take part in the winter fairytale …

Breathe in the fresh mountain air
In the beautiful mountain environment of Jezersko, you can experience a number of exciting adventures. You are welcome to either walk along the valley or trek on neighboring peaks; you can also spend your active holiday mountaineering on protected trails or climbing in one of the numerous climbing routes in north walls. Release your energy in the first Via ferrata in our Alps, participate in various sports, such as paintball, archery or tennis … Explore the Jezersko Valley on bike, indulge yourselves with  a trip by boat on the lake or simply spice up a sunny day with a picnic in  nature or with games on a sports field. Breathe in the fresh mountain air …

Heritage of the ancestors
The life and culture of our ancestors can be reconstructed by visiting and touching their legacy, which is being preserved for all of us. Remember an artistic mind in the Zadnikar Gallery, travelling merchants in the Jenkova house, a peasant life in the Roblekova farmhouse or in the rich collection of Mr Jereb in the Anko farmhouse in Ravne. The Šenk farmhouse, a country settlement characteristic of the Jezersko region, witnesses a long tradition of building of our ancestors. The Češka koča hut at Spodnje Ravne has more than respectable 100 years. Two boundary stones at the Entrance to the community area is proof that this part of Slovenia used to belong to Carinthia. Discover the history …

Creativity of nature
How can one simply pass the high peaks without casting a look at them, where a scent of mountain flora permeates the air on the rocky slopes? Take a walk to wonders created by nature. Drink a mouthful of mineral water rich in magnesium, admire the waterfall Čedca, take a walk towards the south-eastern glacier under the Skuta mountain, feel the fragility of tuff formations, find inner Peace when listening to the rush of the Ankovi Waterfalls or sit down by the shore of Planšarsko Lake, a remainder of the former glacial lake. Above all, afford your eyes a rest in the environment with pleasant climate.

Events
Ski-Touring Competition (last Sunday in January) is a competition of tour skiers from Slovenia and abroad, which is organized to commemorate the deaths of Luka Karničar and Rado Markič, who died in 1997 during a mountain rescue training session in Okrešelj.

Unique attractions

Thematic walking path Ravenska kočna
On a walk in the Ravenska Kočna valley you can catch a glimpse into the past of this beautiful mountain landscape and observe how a glacier changed the surface and how the forces of nature are continuously changing the landscape in front of our eyes. An undemanding route leads along the Jezernica stream and across meadows, from where majestic vistas open towards the northern faces of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps and the highest peak of Mt Grintovec. Along the way you will learn about the formation of this glacial valley, its rich fauna and flora, and all the other landmarks which make the Ravenskakočna valley well worth a visit.

Jezersko-solčava sheep breed
Jezersko-Solčava sheep breed is one of the the Slovenian autochthonous sheep breeds. It belongs to the group of mountainous sheep of the Eastern Alps. The breed was named after the localities of Jezersko and Solčava, where farmers were keeping and breeding this sort in the 18th and 19th century. In general, sheep are sheared twice a year, in April and October. Due to the pasture in the mountainous pasture-grounds, the fresh lamb meat is of the highest quality. A significant feature of the Jezersko-Solčava sheep breed is its all year round fertility.

Mineral water spring
Above the Ank’s homestead there is a spring of mineral water, the so-called “Jezerska slatina”. It is rich in manganese and ammonium and is therefore recommended to people with cardiovascular diseases. Its high concentrations of magnesium on the other hand can stimulate digestion. In the neighboring Eisenkappel, similar water is being used for medicinal baths. In 2013 a water Main was laid all the way to the main road where you can also taste it.

Winter time in Bovec

Bovec is a popular holiday destination, well known for its outdoor activities, natural attractions and World War I sites.

Apart from numerous popular summer outdoor activities, Bovec offers unique winter adventures and gorgeous winter scenes. When there is enough snow, 8 km of prepared easy cross-country skiing tracks are available in Bovec, 3 km of more demanding tracks in Čezsoča and another 3 km in Log pod Mangrtom.

Panorama Bovec; Arhiv: www.bovec.si
Sledding down a snowy mountain road is definitely a unique experience you will never forget. Great fun for all ages! By day you can enjoy the fabulous winter landscape; by night, burning torches romantically illuminate your way. You can also experience a romantic husky sled ride in the surroundings of Bovec.

Fabulous snow covered Alpine slopes invite ski touring fans. You should hire a ski trouring guide who will lead you to the safest and the most suitable places for you. In addition, heli-skiing is starting in January 2015 (contact the Tourist Information Centre in Bovec for more information).

Bovec; Arhiv: www.bovec.si
Ski fans can ski in the nearby Italian ski centres in Sella Nevea and Tarvisio. The guests staying in the Bovec area for at least two nights get a discount on ski passes and a free transfer to these two ski centres. They can also get a discount on ski passes in the nearby Slovene ski centre Kranjska Gora. If you do not have your own ski equipment, you can of course rent it in Bovec. And if your skis are not in the best shape, a ski service will take care of them.

In the low winter temperatures, many waterfalls turn into ice-sculptures and attract ice climbers. The frozen waterfalls in Trenta and Log pod Mangrtom are very popular.

Some activities can be done throughout the year; just the scenery changes with the seasons. One  such activity is zip lining that involves gliding high above the ground along a suspended steel cable.

Zipline; Arhiv: Soca Rafting
Short or long, walking tours in the valley are popular throughout the year. Moreover, snow covered ground should be no problem: snowshoes are the right solution for a deep snow cover. Some sports agencies offer day or night snowshoeing walks.

And why not enjoy a sauna or hot tub or pamper yourself with a massage, aromatherapy, pedicure or manicure?

Besides all the activities, a long list of festive events is waiting for you in December (check the events calendar on our webpage www.bovec.si).

After a fully day of adventures you can find a good night's sleep at Hostel Bovec. The first hostel in Bovec municipality is located just five minutes from the main square. The interior was fully refurnished, offer more than 50 beds in dorms and private rooms with shared bathrooms. They also serve breakfast in a big common room where you can also socialise with the other guests in front of a nice fire place with an incredible view on the Bovec's sport airport. Guests can also access to free Wi-Fi in the whole hostel area.

Day 1
Jono’s trip to Slovenia began on our little coastline. He got the whole day to sightsee the 3 biggest costal towns: Piran, Izola, Koper. When asked about his thoughts on the coastline and the towns, Jono said:

„I was blown away at how gorgeous they were. I never expected them to be so beautiful and the cuisine to be so incredible. Being so close to Italy they are able to take on the best parts of Italian culture, such as slow eating and slow living, whilst still remaining uniquely Slovenian. I love being able to explore the different old towns of European cities and I think along the Slovenian coastline there are some of the best. It's fantastic to be able to take a coffee or a beer and watch the city go by.”

Jono was welcomed in YH Alieti in Izola, where he spent his first night.

Day 2
After breakfast, we took Jono to Ajdovščina, where he enjoyed the punk side of the town:

„Amongst sampling some of the incredible delights from the Vipava Valley with Faladur, I noticed some big changes going on in Ajdovščina. The mayor of the town for over a decade was voted out and replaced with a thirty-two year old guy who was brought up on punk music. In the short time that he has been in office, Ajdovščina has seen an increase in cultural projects that actually hold meaning to a town. Not blatantly wasting money on failing industries, but building a culture which draws people and tourists to a town to start a life. One of these projects was the establishment of the Youth Hostel and Youth Centre at the north end of town. It's the focus point for a growth in music and attendance to live concerts which are now receiving international attention. Acts from across the globe are coming to play in Ajdovščina and to bathe in the town’s punk ethic. It is not just because of one man, but a whole community of leaders in their early thirties. People such as Matej the manager of Youth Hostel Ajdovščina is just one member who has taken it upon himself to build a life there. During the day these leaders work to make this happen, and in the evenings they're all on stage rocking out.”

The trip continued to Škofja Loka and Idrija, where Jono was shown bobbin lace making- the process of making the world famous Idria lace, which Jono had to try doing. As a true man, he accepted the challenge and did quite good. The day ended in Bled, where he stayed in YH Bledec.

Day 3
The third day was dedicated to exploring the jewels of Slovenia, Bled and Bohinj.  In Bled, Mr. Rado from hostel Bledec was kind enough to be Jono’s personal guide and showed him all the beauties that Bled offers. From the natural beauties, to the town and its local community. Jono mentioned Bled in Nina's blog:  www.nina-travels.com/i-feel-slovenia-travel/.

»There are no large cities here, just villages of less than ten thousand people. In Bled I found a sense of community that I have never seen throughout my ten years of travel. Everyone would seem to know everyone, there is a connection to land and place like none other. I was shown the town by Rado fromHostel Bledec, each part of it he could draw family links of well over one hundred years to. As an Australian of European descent it’s nearly impossible for me to do the same.«

In Bohinj, Jono was welcomed in the Youth Hostel Pod Voglom, which is the most active hostel. They offer a lot of sport activities, one of which Jono got to do, he rented a bike and saw the beauty of Bohinj and the famous Bohinj Lake on a bike.

Throughout the trip, Jono tried Slovenian cousine. Different local dishes and of course local wine: „I've got to mention Prazen Krompir don't I? There was even a song written about this amazing potato dish! But really the food was fantastic, incredibly fresh and you can taste the flavors of each region. This is something that I loved about Slovenia, despite the fact that it's small, each region has its own type of food. The wine? Magnificent. I need to come back in summer so I can have a lovely white wine in the sun!”

Day 4
The next day Jono got high. 1522 meters above the see level high. A cable car took him from Lake Bohinj to Vogel, the mountain with the biggest ski resort in Slovenia. After that, Jono visited the little town Radlje ob Dravi in the northeast.

Jono slept the night in hostel Marenberg in Radlje ob Dravi and in the 10 days that he stayed in Slovenia, he got a chance to sleep in a different hostel every night.  We asked him how he liked his accommodations:

„The hostels that are attached to the youth centers are incredible. They offer the young people of Slovenia to be able to meet and talk with people from all over the world. It exposes an entire new generation of Slovenians to the world in a way that is all on their terms.”

Day 5
The fifth day held a big challenge for our visitor: to see 4 countries in 1 day.  And it is possible if you have a car. First stop:  Austria, which was just 15 minutes away. Then back to Slovenia to visit a town called Ižakovci, where Jono had the challenge to transport a car across the river Mura with a wooden raft. Rafting is a local attraction for tourists, who wish to experience the local traditions and the old ways of life. Here is a video of an Australian guy operating a wooden raft:

Next stop was a little town in Hungary called Lenti. Then crossing Slovenia, to visit Croatia and try traditional food in Čakovec. The challenge ended with the arrival to Maribor, the second biggest Slovenian town, where Jono stayed in the Youth Hostel Pekarna.

Jono: „It's an incredible experience to be able to say that you've visited four countries in one day. The borders that I passed through were so incredibly diverse that for me personally I would stay as a passing tourist. The major thing is obviously the airport at Maribor. It needs to get more flights in there.”

I invite you to read the January issue of online magazine Globetrotter where I will recap the last days and Jono’s thoughts on Slovenia.

Until then… here is a video that Jono made for The Big Blog Exchange

"What happens in Tresor, stays in Tresor"

We present "frontman" of Hostel Tresor Ljubljana, Gregor. He says smiling and satisfied guests "create" a well informed and experienced staff. The atmosphere in the hostel is very relaxed, which creates many bonds of friendship.

Gregor, you have been working in Hostel Tresor more than a year now. How do you find overall atmosphere here?
“This question automatically makes me older. Good thing that we are open barely one year and a half. The atmosphere in the hostel is much more relaxed and informal than in the hotels where I worked before. Communication is like that as well. Hostel's guests are closer to me in many ways and that's why so many friendships have been created. "

What makes the hostel unique?
“Hostel is already special because it mostly does not reside only guests, but travellers. They do not want to learn only about the tourist attractions of Ljubljana, but they want to meet also local people and of course people from the hostel. They come because of the good reviews and interesting story, which represents the hostel. And memorable stay while you due contacts who stays generated. We strive to offer our guests the most with various travelogues, concerts or with renting longboards. "

Describe yourself in one sentence.
‘’You're not you when you're hungry.’’

You work as a receptionist. Why did you decide for this job? What does this work mean to you?
"Working with people is like constantly working on yourself. I like when guests feel more relaxed or smiling because I receive them on arrival. Or when I give them some advice and then they enthusiastically thank me and shake hand. But to do this you need to know and understand a lot of things. The experience and first-hand information are crucial here. The reception is frontline and eternal challenge. I cannot imagine that I could ever do anything else. "

With which guests do you connect the most?
“Guests at the hostel are usually young at heart, curious and adventurous. Of course you have exceptions, but mostly I understand their thinking and expectations. So the people who come to the hostel quite suit me. Gregor likes you :)”

Could you share with us any interesting anecdote?
“I have plenty of them. I can only say... What happens in Tresor, stays in Tresor. *wink wink*”

Hostel Tresor is a perfect starting point for exploring a green city because it is located in the very centre of Ljubljana, in a former bank building, close to the famous Prešeren Square and the Triple Bridge. Each room is named after one of the world's currencies, and the walls are decorated with quotes of famous people. Breakfast is served in the biggest ‘’safe’’. Hostel Tresor also offers free Wi-Fi and air-conditioned rooms.

Among cultural sites, there are churches worth visiting, the Church of St. Francis Xavier being especially interesting since it contains a treasure room of maniples from the mid-18th century, one of which was donated by the empress Maria Theresa. Of further interest is also the Raftsmen Collection which is unique in this region, because this economic activity - the transportation and cutting of wood - was an important source of income for our ancestors.

In the municipality, we are also very proud of delicious local cuisine on offer from our service providers in tourism, everything from the Upper Savinja Valley Želodec (an air-dried meat product), homemade cheese, ajdnek (folded cake) and other delicacies.

There are plenty of sports activities on offer, since the town and the municipality present an ideal possibility for various preparations and training of top athletes and at the same time also ideal for recreational enthusiasts.
